Happy birthday Librans!

“October’s child is born for woe,
And life’s vicissitudes must know,
But lay an opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest.”

If you were born in the month of October, the opal is your traditional birthstone.  According to the birthstone poem, some of the properties which the opal is associated with are hope, innocence and purity.  Other metaphysical properties are happiness, faithfulness, loyalty and confidence – all great gifts to give someone by presenting them with an opal as a gift for their birthday.

As you will see from the photos of our beautiful birthstone jewellery, opals can occur in many different colours.  In fact in Greek, Opallos means to see a change of colour – which you certainly can!  White opals show pastel hints within;  black contains ironstone and could be actually be shades of blue, gray or darker black; crystal opals are colourless but with striking flashes of brilliance and my favourite, fire which are translucent with fiery glints of yellow, orange or red.  Small cracks and other internal impurities, and the light reflection on these, are responsible for the colours seen within the stone.  For example, milky or pearly appearance can be due to tiny gas bubbles within the stone, whilst iron oxides will cause a flash of yellow and red in the fire stones.

Tourmaline is the another October birthstone, otherwise known as the peace stone.  This is another stone which is available in a variety of colours and, like opals, can show several different colours within the same stone.  It is a favourite amongst jewellery designers – maybe because it is said to enhance the creativity of the wearer.  It is also said to calm anger, fear, jealousy and will keep the wearer peaceful and tranquil.
